Amputee and Gait Clinic

The loss of a limb produces a permanent disability that impacts mobility and self-esteem. A comprehensive rehabilitation program can enhance recovery and enable individuals to build on strengths in order to maximize their capabilities. Positive reinforcement helps recovery by improving self-esteem and promoting independence.

The Amputee and Gait Clinic offered by the Methodist Hospital Rehabilitation Center is a full-service resource for prosthetic/orthotic evaluation and treatment. The clinic provides pre-prosthetic education and training that combines advanced rehabilitation with innovative prosthetic technology.

Gait Evaluation

A gait evaluation is important for anyone who is learning to walk with a prosthetic limb. Poor gait can lead to limited mobility and falls. Poor walking ability can be due to a number of reasons:

  • Improper fitting prosthetic
  • Poor muscles strength
  • Uncontrolled pain
  • Poor balance
  • Patient insecurity
  • Skin irritation
  • Low back pain

Our rehabilitation experts will evaluate your gait to make sure the prosthetic is fitted properly to eliminate or reduce pain and irritation. Sometimes physical therapy can help build muscle strength to improve a patient’s ability to stand and walk.
