Methodist Hospital debuted the video “Aortic Dissection at Any Age: The Tyler Kahle Story,” in August 2007 as part of a promise made to Tyler’s family to change protocols that contributed to his death at the age of 19. In addition to updating a system that too easily allowed for thoracic aortic dissections to be overlooked in the emergency department, especially in younger people, Methodist Hospital’s administration committed to sharing what had been learned with as many physicians as possible.
What began as a video distributed directly to emergency rooms across the State of Nebraska, has helped lead to the March 16, 2010, announcement by two of the country’s leading medical associations of diagnosis and treatment guidelines for thoracic aortic disease. In conjunction with this announcement, the recently established Thoracic Aortic Disease Coalition is launching a multi-faceted public and medical awareness campaign to maximize the impact of the guidelines.
Tyler’s mother, Debra McMillan, and representatives from Methodist Health System have been instrumental in the formation of the coalition, and have been supportive of the new guidelines.
