Methodist Hospital has been designated a NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Health System Elders) site by the John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing.
The Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Unit is a model of inpatient care that seeks to prevent complications and promote independence in the older adult. The specialized care in the ACE Unit and our motto: "The Bed is Not Your Friend" encourages patients to get up and get moving, which can help speed a patient's return to activities enjoyed before hospitalization.
All nurses at Methodist Hospital are encouraged to become certified in gerontological nursing, to ensure that older patients will receive the best care throughout the hospital.
What Makes an ACE Unit Different?
- Environmental considerations to enhance mobility and independence
- Interdisciplinary team approach with geriatric-trained professionals
- Planning for discharge that begins upon admission
Promoting Safety and Physical Independence
The unit is arranged in a way that encourages physical mobility and social interaction with the medical staff and other patients, including:
- Caregiver work stations outside patient rooms
- Carpeted floors
- Large gym for socialization and wellness
- Pet therapy
- Physical therapy evaluations
- Sit-stand alarms for patient safety to avoid restraint use
- Socialization and leisure activities promoted by therapeutic recreation
