Leading change in emergency departments nationwide
In 2009, Methodist appealed to the CEOs of 28 companies that sell emergency department information system (EDIS) software, urging them to learn from our experience and modify their ED chest pain clinical decision support to include the Methodist aortic dissection bundle developed by Anton Piskac, MD, MHS Vice President of Performance Improvement.McKesson, one of the nation’s leading health care services companies, has agreed to incorporate the bundle in their next software upgrade. This means two of the major five EDIS vendors will use the bundle: McKesson and Cerner, since Cerner made the change for Methodist and all Cerner clients at Methodist’s request. We have recontacted the other vendors to urge them to follow suit.
TAD Coalition participation
We are continuing to work together with Tyler’s mother, Deb McMillan; the National Marfan Foundation; John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health; Ehlers-Danlos Foundation; Loeys-Dietz Syndrome Foundation; GenTAC; International Registry of Acute Aortic Dissection; Dr. Dianna Milewicz at the University of Texas Medical School and other physicians.
They are involved in writing the new guidelines for proper management of thoracic aortic dissection that will be published by the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association, perhaps as early as March 2010.
Methodist is the only community hospital or health system currently involved in this new group taking shape: the Thoracic Aortic Disease (TAD) Coalition. The TAD Coalition, working in collaboration with the American Heart Association, will raise awareness nationwide of the new treatment guidelines and help empower other health care providers to understand and act appropriately on the knowledge that aortic dissection can occur at any age. While the final text of the new guidelines is not yet available, we have been assured that the language will be in keeping with Methodist’s aortic dissection bundle.
Methodist Hospital Foundation support
Methodist is committed to fulfilling our promise to Deb McMillan to take what we have learned beyond our doors to prevent similar tragedies at other institutions. Funding to enable Methodist to continue to carry the message forward, including support of the TAD Coalition, has been provided by Methodist Hospital Foundation.
