Soccer Mom Snack Ideas
Are your kids running from school to practice and getting their pre-work out fuel from chips and candy – or maybe nothing at all? Or, is a pre-game hot dog and soda the usual? Does dinner consist of grab-and-go at a nearby convenience store or the first drive-through you see? Is the local pizza joint number on your cell phone speed dial? Sound familiar? Then it is time to get fueled up with fast and healthy snacks you can keep on hand and take with you on the go. Try some of the following to pack the next time you and your family are on the run.
Healthy Trail Mixes
Easy to eat and tasty, too! No matter which one you buy, you will get important nutrients and long-lasting energy. When choosing a trail mix, avoid excessive saturated and trans fats and added sugars. You can even quickly make your own trail mix and put it in small baggies. Keep a supply of ingredients to choose from: whole-grain dry cereals, dried fruits, nuts, seeds, marshmallows, pretzels and Goldfish crackers.
Fresh Fruit and Veggies
Fresh fruit is always a handy traveling snack. You can also enjoy canned, no sugar added, fruit for an easy and healthy snack. Don’t forget the importance of nutrient-rich vegetables. Pack baby carrots, cucumber slices, red pepper strips or celery in single serving baggies for a healthy and nutritious snack that can be easily eaten for those extra busy days.
Water or Juice Smoothies
Nothing hydrates like good old water; it’s the most important nutrient! Be sure to drink water pre- and post-event, especially when the temperatures get high. Athletes who will be active for more than two hours may benefit from a sports drink, like Gatorade. Juices also can provide some extra carbohydrates and nutrients, however, go easy on the amount and choose only 100 percent juice.
