Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center is home to the metro area's only Elekta Leksell Gamma Knife®, the pinnacle of performance for non-invasive stereotactic radiosurgery. More than 2,000 peer-reviewed papers rate the Gamma Knife as the most accurate and effective radiosurgery option available today.
The Gamma Knife uses ultra-powerful, ultra-precise radiation beams to destroy tumors or other lesions within the brain. A total of 201 beams of radioactive cobalt-60 can be individually programmed to deliver targeted doses through a special head frame and helmet. Treatment is delivered only at the precise point where the beams converge.
Advantages to the patient include:
- Typically no hospitalization
- Few side effects
- Return to normal activities within a day of treatment.
