Mammography
The American Cancer Society recommends women begin screening mammograms at age 40.
Mammography is an X-ray examination of the breast. It is used to detect and diagnose breast disease in women who either have breast problems such as a lump, pain, or nipple discharge, as well as for women who have no breast complaints.
Mammograms allow detection of the following diseases and conditions before they can be detected by a clinical breast exam:
- breast cancers
- benign tumors
- fibroid disease
- cysts
Digital Mammography
Digital mammography replaces X-ray film with detectors that convert X-rays into electric signals, producing images of the breast on a computer screen. Digital mammography utilizes CAD (computer-aided detection) technology and is more effective than film mammography in screening patients who are under age 50, or patients of any age with dense breast tissue.
Digital mammography is available for both women and men.
