August 26, 2009Methodist, UNO Women's Athletics Program Ink Significant Corporate Partnership
Methodist Health System and its affiliates have entered into a major partnership with the University of Nebraska at Omaha Women’s Athletic Program, it was announced today. With the Methodist Women’s Hospital construction site as the backdrop for the announcement, Methodist Hospital President and CEO Steve Goeser was joined for today’s news conference by Methodist Health System President and CEO John Fraser, UNO Chancellor John Christensen, Ph.D.; UNO Athletic Director Trev Alberts; Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator Michele Roberts; and Methodist Women’s Hospital Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Sue Korth.
“This partnership makes great sense not only because it brings together two of Omaha’s leading employers, but also, two employers who are clearly committed to helping advance women in our community,” Goeser said. “It also provides Methodist with expanded opportunities for helping to educate the women of the region on health care issues important to them and their families.”
In addition to getting involved with the Lady Mavs through attendance at games and special events, every UNO female athlete has committed to 40 hours of volunteer service at a Methodist hospital every school year throughout the agreement. The intent, according to both organizations, is to raise awareness of and participation in UNO women’s athletics while joining forces to help get the word out about health issues important to all women.
For patients and families, every baby born at Methodist Women’s Hospital will receive a Maverick onesie and a UNO national letter of intent, signed by Alberts. Parents will also receive complementary tickets to UNO women’s athletic contests.
“This is one of the most significant corporate partnerships UNO athletics has ever entered into,” Alberts said. “Methodist Health System has made a significant commitment to women’s health issues, and it is making a similar commitment to the future of women’s athletics at UNO through this agreement.”
Roberts said that women’s athletics had its genesis in 1969 and the program has remained strong because of the efforts of the student-athletes, coaches and administrators -- especially Assistant Athletic Director Connie Clausen.
“This partnership will ensure that the work done by so many people to provide these athletic opportunities for our women will continue to flourish,” Roberts said.
Korth told those in attendance that construction on the 116-bed, 289,000-square-foot hospital dedicated to excellence in women’s health care is on schedule. She said Methodist expects to open the facility in a little less than a year. Short tours of areas nearing completion were provided at the conclusion of the event.
“This partnership is a natural,” Korth said. “Both programs have high goals, high standards and a proud tradition of serving and providing opportunities to the women of the community.”
