Labor and Delivery
The waiting is over - it's your baby's birthday!
When it's time to have your baby, you want the comfort of knowing you are at a hospital dedicated to you. We designed our labor and delivery rooms and processes for your comfort and safety, the safety of your baby and the convenience of your family.
We offer bedside check-in. When you arrive to deliver your baby, you are taken to your private labor and delivery room where you can be checked in from the comfort of your bed.
If your physician or midwife is a member of the Methodist Women's Center practice, we have the pre-admission form you can complete and submit before you check in for even more convenience.
We've designed our large, private labor and delivery rooms with the safety and comfort of mothers in mind. Some of the features include:
Wireless electronic fetal monitoring
Your baby's heart rate and your contractions can be monitored without requiring you to be attached by wires. This means you can move around the room and the halls to help your labor progress - all while your health and the health of your baby is safely being monitored.
Same-sided room design
Our labor and delivery rooms are designed with all equipment in the same place - making it easier for the staff to quickly delivery care to you and baby.
Our labor beds are equipped with a Tempur-Pedic mattress for comfort. The beds can be placed in many different positions to assist with individual labor preferences. The beds can be reconfigured rapidly to aid changes in labor.
Some labor and delivery rooms are equipped with a jacuzzi tub to help ease your pain during labor.
In-room medical equipment
Each labor and delivery room is equipped with surgery-grade lighting in the ceiling to ensure your physician or midwife have maximum light for your delivery. The rooms are also designed with storage to keep most medical equipment out-of-sight until needed.
Once baby is born, he or she will need a warm place for the first examination. A special cabinet houses a portable baby warmer, oxygen lines and other medical needs in the unlikely case baby needs these.
Safety for mom and baby
No one plans on a complicated birth. Sometimes, however, your baby may need extra attention from our in-house Neonatal ICU. Our labor and delivery rooms are each designed with enough space to accommodate an entire code team should that be necessary. Each room also has a "code pink" button which automatically calls and holds the elevator for the transfer of the baby to the NICU.
Nursing care during labor
Every nurse on staff is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support. ACLS-certified nurses are specially trained to provide the clinical interventions necessary for urgent treatment of cardiac arrest and other medical emergencies.
All Women's Hospital nurses in Labor & Delivery, Mother/Baby, and High-Risk OB units are also ACLS-OB certified, with additional specialty training in the emergency treatment of pregnant or newly-delivered women.
Your nurse will be in contact with your obstetrician or midwife to inform them of the progress of your labor. Once your labor has entered the later stages, your nurse will notify your obstetrician or midwife and continue to provide support in the delivery of your baby.
24/7 physician support
For your comfort and the safety of you and your baby, we have specialized physicians on-site around-the-clock.
Most babies prefer to enter the world on their own special timetables. But don’t worry. For the added safety and convenience of our patients, we have an OB-GYN physician in-house 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This physician is ready for emergencies that may arise and available to assist a mother in labor who arrives before her own obstetrician can get to the hospital.
We want you to have all the options you may want for the birth experience that is right for you. If you desire medication during your labor, we provide 24/7 access to anesthesiologists who specialize in keeping moms comfortable throughout delivery.
Family and visitors
Your spouse or labor support person may stay with you in your labor room. We also have private family lounges for quiet relaxation and conversation. The second floor of Methodist Women's Hospital has a large lounge equipped with comfortable furniture, televisions and computers. Additional information about our hospital is available in the Patient and Visitors section.
