Radiation Oncology

Our radiation oncologists use the latest technology to plan and deliver precise dosages of targeted radiation to destroy cancer cells, shrink tumors or control the progression of your disease.
Call for an Appointment

The Methodist Radiation Oncology centers offer the latest proven technologies for cancer-targeting precision while sparing healthy surrounding cells. Our radiation oncologists meet with a multidisciplinary team of experts to create the best treatment plan for you and your specific diagnosis.

Brachytherapy

This type of radiation treatment is given inside the body, as close to the cancer as possible. It’s used to treat several types of cancer, including:

  • Cervical
  • Uterine
  • Vaginal
  • Prostate

Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)

IGRT uses imaging technology during radiation therapy. The combination of these technologies provides improved precision. Patients with tumors located near vital organs or parts of the body that move are often candidates for this technology. IGRT may be especially beneficial for the following cancers:

  • Breast
  • Gastrointestinal
  • Head and neck
  • Lung
  • Prostate

Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

IMRT uses multidimensional imagery from technology such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to conform the radiation dose to the shape and location of the cancer. The following cancers are typically treated with IMRT:

  • Breast
  • Gynecological
  • Head and neck
  • Prostate

Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT)

VMAT is an advanced form of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) that delivers precise radiation therapy while significantly reducing treatment times. VMAT can be used to treat cancers that need calculated doses of radiation, including cancers found in the:

  • Abdomen
  • Chest wall
  • Female reproductive system
  • Head and neck
  • Lungs
  • Prostate
  • Soft tissues

Stereotactic Radiosurgery

Stereotactic radiosurgery is a safe and effective alternative to traditional surgical and radiation treatments. It works by precisely damaging the DNA of targeted cells.

At Methodist, we offer the Varian Edge radiosurgery system, which allows providers to calculate and monitor patient position and movement, ensuring that radiation is delivered only to the targeted location. This system is especially useful in the treatment of hard-to-reach cancers in the:

  • Brain
  • Lung
  • Spine
