Your Rights

Your Rights as a Patient Include the Right to:

  • Access services regardless of race, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, national origin, religion, disability or source of payment for care.
  • Receive respectful care that recognizes your personal dignity and cultural and spiritual beliefs.
  • Have a family member or person of your choice be notified of your hospital admission.
  • Designate whomever you choose to visit you in the hospital.
  • Receive care in a safe setting, free from all forms of abuse and harassment.
  • Expect personal privacy and confidentiality for your health care information.
  • Participate in treatment planning, including the right to request or refuse treatment.
  • Make informed decisions regarding the testing and treatment you wish to receive.
  • Have your health care providers comply with your advance directives, including living wills and health care durable powers of attorney.
  • Be notified of whether or not your insurance will cover your inpatient care.
  • Receive individualized management of your pain.
  • Be free from physical restraints that are not necessary for medical/surgical care or behavioral management.
  • Access pastoral care and other spiritual services.
  • Be informed of your health status, prognosis and treatment options.
  • Receive a timely response to any concerns regarding the care and services provided to you.
  • Receive information in a manner tailored to your age, language and ability to understand.
  • Access language interpreting and translation services.
  • Receive information in a manner that meets your needs based on vision, speech, hearing or cognitive impairments.
  • Taking photographs or making recordings is generally permitted, but may be monitored or prohibited based on the situation. Photography or recording of a Methodist employee without his or her knowledge is not allowed.

Your Responsibilities

Your Responsibilities as a Patient Include the Responsibility to:

  • Provide complete and accurate information about your medical condition and history to the best of your ability.
  • Comply with hospital rules and participate in the agreed-upon treatment plan.
  • Treat other patients and health care providers with respect and consideration.
  • Ask questions when you do not understand your plan of care or what you are expected to do.
  • Make sure you receive the results of all tests and procedures.
  • Promptly pay hospital bills. If you cannot make prompt payments, contact the patient accounts department at the number provided on your bill.

Designate a Health Partner

When you are admitted, we ask that you designate a health partner. Your health partner will be present during your stay and upon discharge to help you be successful in your plan of care. Your health partner may or may not be your legal representative with power of attorney for health care. 

The role of the health partner is to:

  • Be your advocate and provide support.
  • Ask questions and help you get information, remind you about instructions and help you make decisions.
  • Be present when education regarding your care needs is provided and your discharge plan is reviewed.
  • Facilitate communication among your family members and hospital staff.

Advance Directives

If you have already prepared a health care power of attorney or living will, please ask a family member or friend to bring copies of these documents to the hospital. The chaplain will visit with you about the documents and make sure they are added to your medical record.  More information about advance directives.

Your Family and Visitors

Methodist Hospital promotes and supports a patient- and family-centered approach to care. A family member’s presence is critical to the recovery process by providing support and comfort and as an ally for quality and safety. 

  • As a patient, you have the right to define your “family” and how they will be involved in your care. Family may be anyone related to you by birth or marriage, or family may be those who are your friends or neighbors.
  • Your health partner and adult family members are always welcome. However, your patient care team may restrict hours of visitation and the number of family members based on your plan of care. Arrangements for overnight stays must be coordinated in advance with your nurse.
  • You have the right to choose who visits you. You may request that any visitor be escorted from your room at any time for any reason.
  • The hospital may not exclude a visitor unless that person’s presence disturbs you or another individual’s rights, privacy or safety, or the visit is not advised for medical or therapeutic reasons. Visitation privileges will not be denied on the basis of race, national origin, religion, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.
  • An adult must accompany all children who visit the hospital, and should check with the nurse before bringing children into your room. Health and age restrictions may apply.
  • In an effort to promote rest and healing for our patients, visiting hours for non-family adults and children end at 8:30 p.m.

Family and visitors:

  • Must be free of communicable diseases and comply with infection control regulations.
  • Must follow posted regulations and hospital policies.
  • May not engage in loud, disruptive, threatening, or violent behavior of any kind.

Billing and Finance Questions

After your dismissal, a summary statement from the hospital will be mailed to your home. If you provided the hospital with insurance information, your insurance company will be billed. You may also receive separate bills from physician groups that participated in your care.  More information on billing and insurance questions.

Parking

We offer several options for patient and visitor parking while at Methodist Hospital or the Estabrook Cancer Center. Complimentary valet parking, multi-story parking garage, and surface parking are available. More information about parking.

Methodist Hospital Is a Tobacco-Free Campus

All Methodist campuses are tobacco-free. Smoking, smokeless tobacco, e-cigarettes and vaporizers are not permitted anywhere on the hospital grounds, including the parking areas.

You may wish to talk with your doctor about a nicotine replacement option during your stay.
