Methodist Physicians Clinic’s diabetes and nutrition educational services can provide patients with essential education and support to help manage diabetes and other nutrition concerns with the goal of reducing risk of complications and becoming healthier.

Our experienced team of certified diabetes care and education specialists, registered nurses and registered dietitians cares for patients with prediabetes, type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes. Together with you, your loved ones and your provider, we can help you manage and control your diabetes. Check with your insurance provider for coverage of classes and individual appointments.

Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) Classes

This educational series consists of an introductory class, four optional classes and two optional individual appointments:

Planning Your Diabetes Education

This introductory class, taught by certified diabetes care and education specialists (CDCES), provides you with a new blood glucose meter and education on the MyPlate method and carbohydrate foods. At this class, you’ll choose from four additional classes and plan your diabetes education schedule to fit your individual needs.

Monitoring Your Blood Sugars and Your Health

In this class, you’ll learn the importance of monitoring your blood sugars, problem-solving out-of-range blood sugars and identifying blood glucose trends. You’ll also learn the importance of monitoring your blood pressure, physical activity, food intake, weight and medication, as well as aspects of self-care such as breathing, sleep and mood. You’ll receive the book a “Nutrition for Healthy Living.”

Healthy Eating

Taught by a registered dietitian, this class focuses on healthy nutrition and how food affects your blood sugars. You’ll also learn more about the importance of portion sizes and planning healthy meals and snacks.

Being Active

In this class, a registered nurse will help you set realistic exercise goals that keep you healthy and teach you how to manage your diabetes while exercising. A registered dietitian will give you tips on healthy eating at home and when dining out.

Be Heart Healthy/Reducing Risks

Taught by a registered nurse, this class teaches you how to reduce your risk of diabetes complications, such as heart disease, kidney disease and eye, skin and nerve damage. You’ll learn about the different types of diabetes medications, how they improve blood glucose levels and their common side effects. A registered dietitian will discuss heart-healthy foods.

Individual Appointments

As part of the DSMES classes, two individual appointments with a registered nurse and registered dietitian are available and include an individualized meal plan and assistance with your blood glucose levels. There may be an extra fee.

Additional Education Classes

Advanced Diabetes Management and Technology

Taught by our diabetes experts, this class is for patients interested in learning more about diabetes technology that better controls blood sugars, such as continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps. Patients will receive a refresher on carbohydrate counting, insulin-to-carbohydrate calculations, eating patterns, mixed meals and their effects on blood sugars.

Gestational Diabetes

Our certified diabetes care and education specialists, registered nurses and registered dietitians will help you understand what gestational diabetes is and how to manage your blood sugar during pregnancy. We’ll develop an individualized nutrition plan to fit your specific health needs, lifestyle and preferences. Group classes and individual appointments are available.

Prediabetes

Our diabetes experts will teach you how to reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. You’ll receive an individualized nutrition plan and healthy lifestyle strategies to help you stay healthy. Group classes and individual appointments are available.

Eating Just Enough for Two

Taught by a registered dietitian, this class is for women who are overweight and pregnant or planning a pregnancy. You’ll receive a nutrition plan to help you make healthy food choices and gain the appropriate amount of weight during pregnancy. Group classes and individual appointments are available.

Nutrition Counseling

Meet with a registered dietitian for individual nutrition counseling on issues such as weight management, food allergies and intolerances, healthy pregnancy or other nutrition concerns. Our registered dietitians are members of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and licensed in the state of Nebraska for medical nutrition therapy.
