Mammography

Mammography is an X-ray examination of the breast that is used as a screening tool to detect and diagnose breast disease in women including those who have breast problems such as a lump, pain, or nipple discharges.

Mammograms allow detection of the following diseases and conditions before they can be detected by a clinical breast exam:

  • Breast cancers
  • Benign tumors
  • Fibroid disease
  • Cysts

Digital Mammography

Digital mammography replaces X-ray film with detectors that capture images in computer code, producing brighter, crisper images of the breast on a computer screen. Digital mammography utilizes CAD (computer-aided detection) technology and is more effective than film mammography in screening patients who are under age 50, or patients of any age with dense breast tissue. Digital mammography provides several advantages to film mammography including better resolution, easier to read scans and increased accuracy.
